Your hosts, Angie & Leigh
Angie and Leigh lived in a small mill town called Darwen in Lancashire, England, before emigrating to New Zealand. They left all their family and friends and emigrated here in March 2009 having never been before.
They first settled in Hamilton where Leigh worked for the electricity company, WEL Networks, in risk management and internal audit. Angie worked as a part-time receptionist at a physiotherapy clinic. After a year they moved out of Hamilton to a small town called Ohaupo and bought a house on a lifestyle block on an acre of land. They bought 4 alpacas as pets and to help keep the grass down. They decided to let out 2 rooms in their home and made it into a homestay. They are both keen gardeners and it took 4 years to finish landscaping the gardens.
In September 2014 they came to stay at City Lights for their 10th wedding anniversary. They had a fabulous, relaxing time and told the owner how lucky they thought she was to live in such a beautiful place. She replied by asking “would you like to buy it?” They immediately said “yes!” but thought she was joking. The next day she emailed them saying that she wasn’t joking and it was for sale if they were interested? After meeting up a few times to discuss the details they sold their home and moved into City Lights on 28th November 2014. They started work on 1st December to a full house. Leigh was still working in Hamilton full-time but took some time off to help Angie over the busy summer. It was a huge learning curve as it was the busiest summer ever!
Angie and Leigh both love meeting new people so moving to City Lights has given them the opportunity to do so. They also enjoy the outdoors and like gardening, tramping, photography, birds and nature. They are still exploring the Rotorua area and trying out new walks whenever they can. There are so many beautiful places to visit in the region and the only problem is having the time and fitness to visit them all. They are happy to share their opinions with you on the places they have already visited.
They love their new lives in Rotorua and New Zealand and are keen to help you to enjoy your stay here as much as they do.
